Overview

Metoprolol is a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor blocker (beta-blocker) used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure), angina pectoris (chest pain), heart failure, and to reduce mortality after myocardial infarction. It is also indicated for arrhythmias and prevention of migraine headaches. Metoprolol works by inhibiting beta-1 adrenergic receptors in cardiac tissue, leading to decreased heart rate and contractility as well as reduced cardiac output. This results in lower blood pressure and decreased oxygen demand by the heart. The drug is available in immediate-release (metoprolol tartrate) and extended-release (metoprolol succinate) formulations. Metoprolol was first developed in 1969 and approved for medical use in 1978.
