Metrizoic acid is an ionic, high-osmolality iodinated contrast medium (HOCM) that belongs to the tri-iodinated benzoic acid derivative class. Originally developed by Nycomed, it was used extensively in diagnostic radiology for procedures such as angiography, urography, and computed tomography (CT) to enhance the visualization of vascular structures and soft tissues. Its mechanism involves the attenuation of X-rays by the iodine atoms within the molecule. While it has been largely superseded in clinical settings by non-ionic contrast agents (e.g., iohexol) due to their superior safety profile and lower osmolality, metrizoic acid continues to be utilized in laboratory settings as a component of density gradient media for the isolation and purification of cells, parasites, and other biological particles.
