Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MetroGel 1% is a topical gel formulation containing 1% metronidazole (10 mg per gram), developed and marketed by Galderma for the treatment of inflammatory lesions associated with rosacea. The product utilizes a proprietary HSA-3 base, which is a 92% water-based vehicle containing betadex, niacinamide (vitamin B3), and propylene glycol, designed to enhance skin hydration and optimize the absorption of the active ingredient. While metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial, its precise mechanism of action in treating rosacea is not definitively established, though it is hypothesized to involve anti-inflammatory or antioxidant activities. MetroGel 1% is FDA-approved for once-daily topical application to affected facial areas.
