metronidazole + mezlocillin

Metronidazole + mezlocillin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment and prophylaxis of mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacterial infections, especially in surgical settings such as colon surgery. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa by disrupting DNA synthesis. Mezlocillin is an extended-spectrum penicillin (antipseudomonal penicillin) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, targeting a broad range of Gram-negative and some Gram-positive organisms. The combination provides synergistic activity against both facultative and obligate anaerobes, including Enterococci, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacteroides species, Clostridium species, Fusobacterium species, Peptococcus and Peptostreptococcus. This regimen is often used for perioperative prophylaxis in abdominal surgeries to reduce postoperative infection rates.
