Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This drug is a triple therapy regimen consisting of two antibiotics, metronidazole and amoxicillin, and a proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole. It is used for the eradication of *Helicobacter pylori* infection, particularly in patients with gastritis or peptic ulcer disease. Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole that disrupts bacterial DNA, amoxicillin is a beta-lactam that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, and omeprazole reduces gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase pump in parietal cells. This specific combination was evaluated by the Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University in a pediatric population in Pakistan to compare its efficacy against clarithromycin-based regimens.
