Drug intelligence / Profile preview
metronidazole + doxycycline refers to the therapeutic evaluation of the nitroimidazole antibiotic metronidazole and the tetracycline antibiotic doxycycline for the treatment of oral lichen planus (OLP). This specific drug regimen was investigated by the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in a Phase 2 clinical trial (NCT01185405) to determine and compare the efficacy of these agents in managing the chronic inflammatory disorder. Metronidazole provides anaerobic antibacterial activity and potential immunomodulatory effects, while doxycycline acts as a broad-spectrum antibiotic and a potent inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), which are implicated in the tissue degradation and inflammation characteristic of OLP. The study aimed to assess whether these systemic treatments could effectively reduce the clinical signs and symptoms of OLP, offering an alternative to traditional steroid therapies.
