metronidazole + lidocaine

Metronidazole + lidocaine is a topical combination drug consisting of metronidazole, a nitroimidazole antibiotic and antiprotozoal agent, and lidocaine, an amide-type local anesthetic. Metronidazole acts by disrupting the DNA of microbial cells, leading to cell death in susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. Lidocaine works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neuronal membranes, thereby inhibiting nerve impulse conduction and providing local anesthesia. This combination is primarily used for symptomatic relief of pain (via lidocaine) and prevention or treatment of infection (via metronidazole) in conditions such as anal fissures or other anorectal disorders where both analgesic and antimicrobial actions are beneficial[6][7]. The formulation is typically applied topically as a cream or gel.
