Combizol is a fixed-dose combination antimicrobial therapy developed by Navil Laboratories, containing the fluoroquinolone antibiotic norfloxacin and the nitroimidazole antiprotozoal/antibacterial agent metronidazole. Norfloxacin acts by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. Metronidazole is activated in anaerobic environments to form reactive intermediates that disrupt helical DNA structure, inhibiting nucleic acid synthesis and leading to cell death. This combination provides broad-spectrum coverage against both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, as well as protozoa. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of gastrointestinal infections, including infectious diarrhea, amoebic dysentery, and mixed intestinal infections.
