Overview

This is a combination of three antibiotics—metronidazole, penicillin, and tobramycin. Each component has a distinct mechanism of action and antimicrobial spectrum: - **Metronidazole** is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa. It works by disrupting DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms, leading to cell death[5][7]. - **Penicillin** refers to the class of beta-lactam antibiotics that inhibit bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), resulting in bacterial lysis[3][4]. - **Tobramycin** is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds irreversibly to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing cell death. It is particularly active against Gram-negative bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa[1][2][8]. This combination would provide broad-spectrum coverage against aerobic Gram-positive (penicillins), Gram-negative (tobramycin), and anaerobic organisms (metronidazole). Such combinations are sometimes used empirically for severe mixed infections or intra-abdominal infections where polymicrobial etiology is suspected.
