Metronidazole amino acidum natrium is a pharmaceutical formulation that combines metronidazole, a nitroimidazole-class antimicrobial and antiprotozoal agent, with an amino acid sodium salt. This combination has been studied primarily as a radiosensitizer in the treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Metronidazole itself acts as a prodrug that is reduced within anaerobic cells to generate cytotoxic intermediates (such as nitroso free radicals), which cause DNA strand breaks and cell death. The addition of the "amino acidum natrium" component may enhance solubility or pharmacokinetics but does not fundamentally alter the mechanism of action attributed to metronidazole. In clinical studies, this formulation combined with radiation therapy has shown improved objective response rates and survival outcomes compared to radiation alone in nasopharyngeal carcinoma[6]. The primary mechanism remains DNA damage via reduction-activated cytotoxicity under hypoxic conditions.
