Metuximab is a chimeric monoclonal antibody that specifically targets the CD147 antigen (also known as basigin or HAb18G), which is highly expressed on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. The most clinically relevant formulation is 131I-metuximab (Licartin), in which the antibody is radiolabeled with iodine-131 for targeted radioimmunotherapy. Metuximab binds to CD147 on tumor cells and delivers localized radiation when labeled with 131I, resulting in direct cytotoxicity to cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. It has been primarily developed and used in China as an adjuvant therapy for unresectable or recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma, often following transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) or after surgical resection[8][10][6]. Clinical studies have shown that 131I-metuximab can significantly prolong recurrence-free survival and overall survival in patients with HCC expressing CD147[8][10].
