Overview

Metyrosine is a tyrosine hydroxylase inhibitor used to treat excessive sympathetic stimulation in pheochromocytoma. It works by blocking the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase, which is the rate-limiting step in catecholamine biosynthesis, thereby reducing the production of epinephrine and norepinephrine. This leads to decreased symptoms such as high blood pressure, headaches, sweating, and tachycardia associated with pheochromocytoma. Metyrosine is indicated for preoperative preparation for surgery in patients with pheochromocytoma, management when surgery is contraindicated, and chronic treatment of malignant pheochromocytoma[1][2][4].
