Overview
**Mevac-OPV** is a live attenuated **oral polio vaccine (OPV)** containing a mixture of weakened strains of poliovirus serotypes 1, 2, and/or 3, designed to prevent paralytic poliomyelitis. It replicates in the intestinal tract upon oral administration, inducing a strong local mucosal immune response in the gut mucosa alongside systemic humoral immunity via antibody production, mimicking natural wild-type poliovirus infection while avoiding disease; this also enables community spread for indirect vaccination of contacts. Primarily used in routine immunization programs in polio-endemic regions, it was developed for mass campaigns but carries a rare risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) due to reversion; manufactured as drops for oral use, typically in 2-4 dose schedules interchangeable with inactivated polio vaccine (IPV).[1][7]
