Overview

Mexis is a street term for counterfeit opioid pills, primarily containing fentanyl, that are illicitly manufactured, often in Mexico. These pills are typically blue with a capital “M” on one side and the number “30” on the other, imitating legitimate oxycodone 30 mg pills (e.g., Roxicodone or Roxicet). The primary active ingredient, fentanyl, is a potent synthetic opioid that acts as an opioid receptor agonist, leading to central nervous system depression. Mexis are highly dangerous due to their unknown and inconsistent dosage of fentanyl, often leading to overdose. They may also contain other substances, such as xylazine, which is a veterinary sedative and not reversible by naloxone. The most common method of administration is smoking, where the pill is heated on aluminum foil and the smoke inhaled.
