Overview
**MF59** is a proprietary squalene-based oil-in-water vaccine adjuvant used to strengthen, broaden, and prolong immune responses to co-administered influenza antigens. It is a submicron emulsion containing squalene stabilized with polysorbate 80 and sorbitan trioleate in citrate buffer. MF59 has been used in licensed adjuvanted influenza vaccines and was evaluated by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority in Phase 2 pandemic-preparedness studies with stockpiled inactivated monovalent Influenza A H5 vaccines, including H5N1 and H5N8 antigen preparations. MF59 is not itself an influenza antigen or a standalone influenza vaccine; its activity depends on inclusion with a vaccine antigen.
