Drug intelligence / Profile preview
MF59 + eTIV + H5N1 is an investigational tetravalent influenza vaccine developed by Novartis Vaccines. It combines a seasonal egg-derived trivalent influenza vaccine (eTIV) with a pandemic H5N1 influenza antigen, formulated with the MF59 adjuvant. MF59 is a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion that enhances the immune response by promoting the recruitment of antigen-presenting cells and stimulating local cytokine production. The vaccine is designed to provide simultaneous protection against three seasonal influenza strains and one pandemic-potential H5N1 strain in a single intramuscular injection. This approach aims to simplify vaccination logistics and improve population readiness during a potential avian influenza pandemic. Clinical development reached Phase II, where it was evaluated for safety and immunogenicity compared to separate administrations of seasonal and pandemic vaccines.
