The MF59-adjuvanted H7N9 vaccine is a monovalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) developed to protect against the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus, which is considered to have significant pandemic potential. Developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the vaccine utilizes inactivated virus particles, typically derived from the A/Anhui/1/2013 strain. It is formulated with MF59, a proprietary oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant, which is designed to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response. This is particularly critical for H7N9 antigens, which are known to be poorly immunogenic on their own, and for older adult populations who may experience age-related immunosenescence. The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin protein, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells.
