Overview

MF59-adjuvanted trivalent influenza vaccine (alternate B strain), also referred to as aTIV-2 in clinical trials, is a seasonal influenza vaccine developed by Seqirus. It is a biologic containing inactivated influenza virus surface antigens (hemagglutinin proteins) from two influenza A strains (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B strain. The 'alternate B strain' designation indicates that the vaccine contains the influenza B lineage (either B/Yamagata or B/Victoria) that was not selected for the primary trivalent vaccine formulation in a given season. The vaccine is formulated with the MF59 adjuvant, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion designed to enhance immune responses, particularly in older adults aged 65 years and above who may experience immunosenescence. The vaccine is administered via intramuscular injection to induce protective antibody responses against seasonal influenza.
