MGD-14 is a novel small molecule compound, part of a series of phenylpropionic acid-based hybrids, designed and synthesized as a potential treatment for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM). It has been characterized by 1H and 13C NMR and evaluated through chemo-informatic programs for its biological activity, pharmacokinetics, toxicity, metabolism, and molecular docking. In preclinical in vivo studies using a murine model of non-insulin-dependent diabetes, MGD-14 demonstrated a significant hypoglycemic effect, reducing glucose levels from the first hour of administration at a dose of 50 mg/kg, an effect comparable to Glibenclamide. This suggests it acts as a dual agonist for Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptors alpha and gamma (PPARα/γ) and may also exhibit insulin-mimetic properties. MGD-14 is considered a safe experimental lead for T2DM treatment.
