Overview

MI226 is an investigational small molecule adipocytolytic agent developed by Nanjing Mainoway Pharmaceutical Technology for the non-surgical reduction of localized fat, specifically targeting abdominal fat accumulation. Administered via subcutaneous injection directly into the adipose tissue, MI226 acts as a detergent-like agent that disrupts the phospholipid bilayer of adipocyte cell membranes. This disruption leads to localized cell lysis (adipocytolysis), followed by an inflammatory response that clears the cellular debris and released lipids through natural metabolic pathways. This mechanism is intended to provide a minimally invasive alternative to surgical procedures like liposuction for body contouring. As of 2026, MI226 is undergoing Phase I clinical evaluation in China to assess its safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic profile in overweight or obese individuals with significant abdominal fat accumulation.
