Overview

Hengsen (micafungin sodium) is an echinocandin antifungal agent developed and marketed by Hansoh Pharma in China. It is a generic version of Astellas Pharma's Mycamine. Micafungin sodium is a semi-synthetic lipopeptide that acts as a non-competitive inhibitor of 1,3-beta-D-glucan synthase, an essential enzyme for the synthesis of 1,3-beta-D-glucan in the fungal cell wall. This disruption of cell wall integrity leads to osmotic instability and fungal cell lysis. Hengsen is approved for the treatment of invasive fungal infections, including candidemia, acute disseminated candidiasis, Candida peritonitis, abscesses, and esophageal candidiasis, as well as for the prophylaxis of Candida infections in patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
