Micro-encapsulated hepatocytes are a bioartificial liver support system consisting of hepatocytes (liver cells) embedded in a semi-permeable polymerized structure, typically made of alginate. This technology serves as a temporary liver support for patients with acute liver failure, allowing native liver regeneration while protecting the transplanted cells from immune attack. The semi-permeable membrane permits diffusion of nutrients, oxygen, and metabolic products to maintain cell survival and function while preventing immune cells from attacking the encapsulated hepatocytes. This approach eliminates the need for immunosuppression and reduces the risk of bleeding compared to traditional liver transplantation or intrahepatic hepatocyte transplantation.
