Micro-fragmented autologous adipose tissue (MFAT) is a biological product obtained through the mechanical processing of a patient's own lipoaspirate. Unlike traditional enzymatic digestion methods used to isolate stromal vascular fraction (SVF) or expanded mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), MFAT is produced using a closed system (such as the Lipogems device) that washes, emulsifies, and micro-fragments the adipose tissue while preserving the structural integrity of the adipose niche. This process retains the pericytes and MSCs in their natural microenvironment, which are thought to provide sustained release of trophic, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative factors. MFAT is primarily used in regenerative medicine for conditions such as osteoarthritis, complex anal fistulas (including those related to Crohn's disease), and chronic wound healing.
