Microfragmented adipose tissue (MFAT) is an autologous orthobiologic therapy derived from a patient's own adipose tissue, typically harvested via liposuction from the abdomen or flanks. The tissue is processed using a non-enzymatic, mechanical fragmentation device (such as the Lipogems system) that washes away pro-inflammatory oils and blood residue while preserving the structural integrity of the adipose matrix. This process yields a product rich in pericytes, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and anti-inflammatory cytokines. MFAT is primarily administered via intra-articular or intratendinous injection to treat degenerative musculoskeletal conditions, including osteoarthritis and tendinopathy. Its therapeutic effects are mediated through paracrine signaling, immunomodulation, and the promotion of angiogenesis and tissue regeneration, providing a minimally invasive alternative to surgical intervention for patients with chronic joint pain.
