MicroIslet-P is a xenogeneic cell therapy consisting of microencapsulated porcine pancreatic islet cells, developed for the treatment of Type 1 diabetes. The therapy involves harvesting insulin-producing beta cells from pigs and encasing them in a biocompatible alginate-based coating. This encapsulation is designed to allow the free diffusion of insulin, glucose, and nutrients while shielding the foreign cells from the host's immune system, potentially bypassing the need for chronic immunosuppression. The product was intended to provide self-regulating blood glucose control and reduce or eliminate the need for exogenous insulin injections. Development was halted in the preclinical stage following the developer's bankruptcy in 2008.
