Microlipid

Microlipid is an enteral fat supplement formulated as a concentrated emulsion of safflower oil. It is primarily used to increase the caloric density of feedings for patients with high energy requirements or fluid restrictions, such as very low birth weight (VLBW) infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and individuals with short bowel syndrome or malabsorption disorders. By providing a concentrated source of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (primarily linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid), Microlipid helps optimize growth, improve protein absorption, and facilitate intestinal adaptation, often allowing for a reduction in the use of parenteral nutrition. It is commonly used for targeted breast milk fortification and in the management of infants with enterostomies.
