Micronized ferric pyrophosphate (MFPP) is an inorganic iron compound used as a nutritional supplement and food fortification ingredient to treat and prevent iron deficiency anaemia. It consists of ferric iron in the form of ferric pyrophosphate, micronized to a very small particle size (approximately 3 μm) to improve bioavailability and dispersibility compared to standard ferric pyrophosphate. In clinical settings, particularly in pediatric populations in developing regions, it has been evaluated as a component of 'Sprinkles' — single-dose sachets of micronutrient powder designed for home-fortification of complementary foods. The compound works by providing a source of iron for absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, which is then utilized for the replenishment of systemic iron stores and the synthesis of hemoglobin.
