Overview

A microRNA-31-5p mimic is a synthetic, chemically modified double-stranded RNA molecule designed to replicate the biological activity of the endogenous microRNA miR-31-5p. miR-31-5p is a highly conserved microRNA that plays a dual role in human physiology, acting as either a tumor suppressor or an oncogene depending on the tissue context and the specific mRNA targets available. As a therapeutic mimic, it is primarily investigated in contexts where miR-31-5p is downregulated, such as in certain subtypes of breast cancer, lung cancer, and in chronic non-healing wounds. Upon delivery into cells, the mimic is processed and loaded into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), where it binds to the 3' untranslated regions (UTRs) of target mRNAs, leading to their degradation or translational inhibition. Key targets include E2F2, BCL2, and RhoA, which are involved in cell cycle regulation, apoptosis, and cytoskeletal remodeling. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that miR-31-5p mimics can inhibit tumor growth and promote keratinocyte migration to accelerate wound closure.
