Overview

microRNA-34c antagomir is a synthetic, chemically modified antisense oligonucleotide designed to specifically inhibit the activity of microRNA-34c (miR-34c). In the context of Alzheimer's disease, miR-34c is often upregulated in the hippocampus, where it suppresses the expression of proteins critical for synaptic function and memory, such as Postsynaptic Density Protein 95 (PSD-95) and the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). By binding to miR-34c, the antagomir prevents it from interacting with its target mRNAs, thereby restoring the levels of PSD-95 and mTOR and ameliorating cognitive deficits. It is primarily used as an experimental therapeutic agent in preclinical models of neurodegeneration.
