microRNA-423-3p mimic is a synthetic double-stranded RNA molecule designed to replicate the activity of the endogenous microRNA-423-3p. In the context of oncology, specifically cervical cancer, it acts as a tumor suppressor by modulating the tumor microenvironment. The mimic functions by directly targeting the mRNA of Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4), leading to its downregulation. This inhibition subsequently reduces the phosphorylation of Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and silences the expression of Interleukin 6 (IL-6). By suppressing CDK4, the mimic inhibits the M2 polarization of macrophages, which is a key driver of cancer cell progression and tumor growth.
