microrna2911 plasmid is a gene therapy candidate developed by researchers at Nanjing University for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. The plasmid is engineered to express miR-2911, a highly stable microRNA originally discovered in honeysuckle (*Lonicera japonica*). miR-2911 acts by directly binding to specific nucleotide sequences within the SARS-CoV-2 genome, including the regions encoding the spike (S) protein and the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp). This binding leads to the degradation of viral RNA or the inhibition of its translation, thereby suppressing viral replication. Unlike many other plant miRNAs, miR-2911 is uniquely stable due to its high GC content and can be absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract when consumed in honeysuckle soup; however, the plasmid formulation is designed for direct cellular expression to maximize therapeutic efficacy and provide a targeted antiviral response.
