Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Micrurus frontalis venom is the crude venom of the South American coral snake *Micrurus frontalis*. It is a complex biological mixture composed primarily of neurotoxic three-finger toxins (frontoxins) and phospholipases A2 (PLA2). The venom's primary toxic mechanism is the blockade of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the neuromuscular junction, leading to neuromuscular blockade and muscle paralysis. In Brazil, this venom is utilized as an immunogen to hyperimmunize horses for the production of bivalent coral snake antivenom (antielapidic serum) by the Instituto Butantan and Fundação Ezequiel Dias (FUNED). It is not used as a therapeutic agent for any disease.
