Midazolam + atropine is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents commonly used for procedural sedation, particularly in pediatric and perioperative settings. Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine that acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the gamma-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA-A) receptor, producing sedative, anxiolytic, amnestic, and anticonvulsant effects[6][7]. Atropine is an antimuscarinic agent that competitively inhibits acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors, leading to reduced secretions (antisialagogue effect), prevention of bradycardia during anesthesia or procedures, and mitigation of vagal responses[5][9]. The combination may be used to provide effective sedation while minimizing procedure-related discomfort and excessive salivation. This regimen is especially useful in pediatric patients undergoing minor invasive procedures or premedication before anesthesia[1][2].
