Midazolam + pethidine is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs used primarily for procedural sedation and analgesia, especially in settings such as gastrointestinal endoscopy and minor surgical or diagnostic procedures. Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine that acts as a central nervous system depressant by potentiating the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), resulting in sedative, anxiolytic, amnestic, and muscle relaxant effects[1][4][6]. Pethidine (also known as meperidine) is an opioid analgesic that acts mainly on mu-opioid receptors to provide pain relief[8]. The combination leverages the sedative properties of midazolam with the analgesic effects of pethidine to improve patient comfort during invasive procedures. This regimen has been widely used for conscious sedation in adults and children but carries risks associated with combined CNS depression, including respiratory depression and hypotension[2][4][5].
