Midazolam + thiopental sodium is a combination of two intravenous anesthetic agents used primarily for the induction of general anesthesia and procedural sedation. Midazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine that acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the GABA-A receptor, producing sedative, anxiolytic, amnestic, and anticonvulsant effects. Thiopental sodium (also known as thiopentone) is an ultra-short-acting barbiturate that induces hypnosis and anesthesia by enhancing GABAergic inhibition in the central nervous system. When used together, these drugs exhibit synergistic (supraadditive) effects on inducing unconsciousness and reducing individual variability in response to anesthesia. The combination allows for lower doses of each drug to achieve effective anesthesia with potentially fewer side effects compared to higher doses of either agent alone[1][2][3]. This regimen has been studied for use in surgical procedures requiring rapid induction and recovery from anesthesia, as well as in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), especially among older patients or those with comorbidities where hemodynamic stability is important[2][7].
