Drug intelligence / Profile preview
The Midazolam autoinjector developed by Rafa Laboratories is a 10 mg intramuscular formulation approved by the FDA in August 2022 for the treatment of status epilepticus (prolonged seizures) in adults. Developed in partnership with the U.S. Department of Defense's Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense (JPEO-CBRND), this combination product is designed for rapid emergency use in field settings. Midazolam is a benzodiazepine that acts as a positive allosteric modulator of GABA-A receptors in the central nervous system, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission to terminate seizure activity. The autoinjector allows for administration through clothing without the need for intravenous access, making it a critical tool for managing seizures resulting from status epilepticus or nerve agent exposure. It serves as a replacement for previously fielded diazepam autoinjectors.
