Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Mikacin is a brand name for amikacin, a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic manufactured by Merlin Pharmaceuticals (Merlin Pharma (P) Limited). It is a small molecule drug provided as an injectable formulation, available in various strengths such as 50 mg (Mikacin M 50) and 250 mg (Mikacin MP 250). Amikacin is bactericidal and exerts its effect by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria, specifically the 16S rRNA, which interferes with the initiation of protein synthesis and induces mRNA misreading. This drug is primarily indicated for the treatment of serious infections caused by multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, *Escherichia coli*, and *Klebsiella* species, as well as certain mycobacterial infections.
