Overview

Mikoferon is a topical combination pharmaceutical developed by the Russian company Firn M for the treatment of fungal skin infections, such as dermatomycosis. It is formulated as an ointment containing recombinant human interferon alfa-2b and the antifungal agent terbinafine. The interferon component acts as an agonist at the interferon alpha/beta receptor (IFNAR), triggering signaling pathways that enhance local innate and adaptive immune responses to help the body combat the infection. Terbinafine, a small molecule allylamine, provides direct antifungal activity by inhibiting the enzyme squalene epoxidase. This inhibition disrupts the biosynthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes, leading to fungal cell death. By combining immunomodulatory and fungicidal actions, Mikoferon aims to effectively clear cutaneous fungal pathogens while supporting the local immune environment to prevent recurrence.
