Milbemycin oxime is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic drug from the milbemycin class used primarily in veterinary medicine. It is effective against a range of nematodes (including heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) and some mites (such as Sarcoptes and Demodex). The drug acts by binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels on parasite nerve and muscle cells. This increases the permeability of these membranes to chloride ions via enhanced release of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The resulting disruption in nerve signal transmission leads to neuro-paralysis and death of the parasites. Milbemycin oxime is FDA-approved for prevention of heartworm disease in dogs and cats but is less potent against heartworm than ivermectin. It is also used off-label for mite infestations in dogs[1][2][4][6].
