Milk basic protein (MBP) is a functional protein fraction isolated from bovine milk whey, characterized by its alkaline isoelectric point. It is primarily utilized for its osteoprotective properties, acting through a dual mechanism that promotes bone formation and inhibits bone resorption. MBP stimulates the proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts while suppressing the activity and formation of osteoclasts. Bioactive components within the fraction, such as bovine angiogenin, lactoperoxidase, and cystatin C, mediate these effects by modulating RANKL signaling and increasing the systemic production of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and ghrelin. MBP is widely incorporated into functional foods and dietary supplements aimed at maintaining bone mineral density and preventing osteoporosis, particularly in postmenopausal women and growing children.
