Milk fat globule epidermal growth factor 8 is a recombinant protein biologic based on the endogenous secreted glycoprotein MFG-E8, also known as lactadherin. It is being investigated primarily in preclinical and translational research as an anti-inflammatory and tissue-protective therapeutic for acute injury and inflammatory disorders, including hemorrhagic shock, acute lung injury, intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury, spinal cord injury, neonatal sepsis, renal injury, and intestinal fibrosis. Mechanistically, MFG-E8 binds phosphatidylserine on apoptotic cells and engages integrins such as alpha v beta 3 and alpha v beta 5 through its RGD motif, thereby promoting efferocytosis, dampening inflammatory signaling, and supporting resolution of tissue injury. Available information indicates academic and experimental development rather than a clearly identified commercial drug product or branded pharmaceutical program.
