The pandemic influenza booster patch, specifically the MIMIX-Flu H5N1 candidate, is a transdermal microneedle delivery system designed for rapid immunization against pandemic-potential influenza strains. Developed by Vaxess Technologies with support from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), the patch utilizes a proprietary silk fibroin-based microneedle platform. This technology encapsulates influenza antigens, such as monovalent inactivated H5N1 virus, within the microneedles. Upon application to the skin, the microneedles dissolve or release the vaccine into the epidermal and dermal layers over a period of several days. This sustained-release profile is intended to mimic the kinetics of a natural infection, potentially enhancing the magnitude, breadth, and durability of the immune response compared to traditional bolus intramuscular injections. The patch is designed to be shelf-stable at room temperature and capable of self-administration, addressing critical logistical barriers to mass vaccination during a pandemic.
