Overview

Mimosine is a non-proteinogenic amino acid and a structural analog of tyrosine that is naturally found in certain plants such as Mimosa species and all members of the genus Leucaena. It acts primarily as an iron/zinc chelator and exerts its biological effects by inhibiting DNA replication. Mimosine induces cell cycle arrest in late G1 phase by preventing the initiation or elongation of DNA replication through inhibition of ribonucleotide reductase (an iron-dependent enzyme) and suppression of serine hydroxymethyltransferase gene transcription. This leads to DNA double-strand breaks and activation of the DNA damage response pathway. Mimosine has been studied for its antitumor/antiproliferative properties as well as potential anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antiviral, herbicidal/insecticidal activities. It is used experimentally in research settings for cell cycle synchronization and plant growth regulation[1][2][5].
