Overview

MIMP (micro integral membrane protein) is a protein derived from Lactobacillus plantarum. It is being investigated for its role in protecting the intestinal barrier from injury and reducing intestinal permeability. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting zonulin, a protein that regulates intestinal permeability, and this inhibition is further regulated by microRNA-122a. MIMP also enhances the expression and distribution of tight junction proteins, modulates inflammatory cytokines by decreasing pro-inflammatory and increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines, and influences the gut microbiota. Additionally, it has been shown to modulate the Toll-like receptor 4 pathway and histone acetylation, and binds to DC-SIGN on dendritic cells to induce anti-inflammatory responses.
