Mineral oil is a clear, odorless oily substance derived from petroleum and used primarily as a lubricant laxative to relieve occasional constipation. It works by coating the bowel and stool with a waterproof film which helps retain moisture in the stool and intestines. This softens the stool and makes it easier to pass. Mineral oil is available over-the-counter in oral or rectal forms and typically produces a bowel movement within 6 to 8 hours of administration[1][2][3][5]. It should not be used for more than one week without medical supervision due to potential interference with absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E & K)[1][7]. Besides its pharmaceutical use as a laxative or enema (e.g., Fleet Mineral Oil Enema), it is also widely used as an excipient in cosmetics (lotions/creams/ointments) and other industrial applications[3][4].
