Mingjing granule is a compound traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal formula developed for the treatment of neovascular (wet) age-related macular degeneration (nAMD/wAMD). It is designed to "cool blood and remove blood stasis" according to TCM theory, and is used as an adjunct therapy alongside anti-VEGF agents such as ranibizumab. The formulation contains multiple botanical ingredients listed in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, with active compounds including quercetin, lignocaine, kaempferol, and luteolin. Mechanistically, Mingjing granule acts via multi-target and multi-pathway effects—modulating vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), tumor necrosis factor (TNF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 2 (PTGS2/COX-2), caspase-3, interleukin-17 signaling pathways, and factors involved in inflammation and fibrosis. Preclinical studies show it inhibits choroidal neovascularization by reducing VEGF/MMP-9 expression; clinical trials are ongoing to assess its efficacy as an add-on therapy for nAMD[1][2][3][4][6].
