Overview

Mini-pool intravenous immunoglobulin (MP-IVIG) is a formulation of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) produced from the pooled plasma of a small group ("mini-pool") of donors rather than the large pools used in standard commercial IVIG products. The process typically involves pooling plasma from a limited number of screened donors and purifying the immunoglobulins using methods such as caprylic acid precipitation for virus inactivation and protein purification[3][8]. This approach allows for local or small-scale production with minimal infrastructure requirements. Like standard IVIG, MP-IVIG contains polyclonal IgG antibodies that modulate immune responses by neutralizing pathogens and autoantibodies, blocking Fc receptors on phagocytes, and regulating complement activation. It is primarily indicated for antibody deficiencies (such as primary immunodeficiency), autoimmune diseases (e.g., immune thrombocytopenia), inflammatory disorders, and certain infections[5][6][8]. Clinical studies have shown that MP-IVIG is well tolerated and effective in conditions like immune thrombocytopenia with efficacy comparable to standard IVIG[5].
