Minimally manipulated adipose tissue (MM-AT), also known as microfragmented adipose tissue (MFAT), is an autologous cell-based biologic therapy developed by the IRCCS Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis. The product is prepared from the patient's own adipose tissue, typically obtained via liposuction, which is then mechanically processed to create a washed and emulsified tissue product without the use of enzymatic digestion or cell expansion. This process preserves the natural niche of adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ASCs) and other bioactive components. When administered as a single intra-articular injection, MM-AT is intended to modulate the inflammatory environment of the osteoarthritic joint and promote tissue regeneration. It is currently being evaluated in clinical trials comparing its efficacy to bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC).
