Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Miniplus is an oral antihypertensive combination product developed and manufactured by Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Plc in Nigeria. It consists of two active ingredients: prazosin hydrochloride (0.5 mg), a selective alpha-1 adrenergic blocker, and hydrochlorothiazide (12.5 mg), a thiazide diuretic. Prazosin functions by inhibiting alpha-1 receptors on vascular smooth muscle, leading to peripheral vasodilation and reduced systemic vascular resistance. Hydrochlorothiazide complements this effect by inhibiting sodium reabsorption in the distal convoluted tubules, promoting diuresis and reducing extracellular fluid volume. Beyond its primary indication for moderate hypertension, the prazosin component provides symptomatic improvement for patients with co-morbid Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH). Miniplus was introduced in 2003 as a reformulated version of Minizide, specifically designed to enhance affordability and accessibility within the Nigerian healthcare system under the FITGAH (Fight the Good Fight Against Hypertension) initiative.
