Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Minisiston is a combined oral contraceptive (COC) developed by Bayer, containing a fixed-dose combination of the synthetic estrogen ethinylestradiol (0.03 mg) and the synthetic progestin levonorgestrel (0.125 mg). As a second-generation contraceptive, it prevents pregnancy primarily by suppressing the secretion of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), which inhibits ovulation. Additionally, it induces changes in the cervical mucus to increase its viscosity and impede sperm penetration, while also altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Minisiston is typically administered orally in a 21-day active pill cycle followed by a 7-day pill-free interval to allow for withdrawal bleeding.
